I have been listening to WYWH recently and was wondering what Welcome to the Machine is all about and how it really fits in with the rest of the Album. It doesnt really seem to me like it fits in with the theme of the album ie - shine on and WYWH being about Syd leaving the band etc.. Does anyone know what the song is really about? Wish You Were Here is an album that laments Barrett's departure, but WYWH is one of two fulminations to be found on that record (along with "Have A Cigar") about the state of the record industry. The lyrics in Welcome To The Machine also tie in with Syd, and it's often been said that record company pressure was one of the many contributing factors that pushed poor Syd over the edge.
